I am a single mothere of a two year old. I currently live on a college campus because I am finishing my masters. I need my daughter to attend preschool. most of the preschools in this area are about 700 doallars per month. they do not accept subsadaries. how can I find some other type of monetary help? Wounderful site! I'm glad I found it. I have been doing in home daycare for almost 20 years. The laws are changing here and getting tougher, as they are accross the country. I have had a family daycare business since October of 1995. I have found that the best form of advertising comes through your parents by referring others to you and if there are organizations in your area that subsidize childcare. Most advertising that I have done in local newspapers, pocket calenders, etc. have been a waste of money. You want to keep your overhead costs down so "word of mouth" works best. It is also handy if you have business cards available to hand out for those who are interested. As far as grants, since I have a state certified daycare, the state sends me applica- tions for grants for equipment as they become available to them. Fundraisers are a good way obtain needed items plus incorporate your clients as advertisers for your daycare.

I have been a child care provider for over ten years. I love what I do. I find it amazing that there are so many of us and yet we are alone. I wonder if it would be possible to create a union for ourselves. I wonder how many of us buy our own medical insurance, have a retirement plan, or unemployement or disability benefits? What about a credit union? I ask myself these questions because it seems any large company or organization has all of those things plus. I find it difficult to stay in this business and provide to the best of my ability for my own family. I am a single parent with a ten year old son. We live well, but we could do better. Am I the only one who feels there are no safety nets for we the providers? We work long hours, and provide a necessary resource for so many yet we are not recognized as a group. I wonder what would happen if for one week we all took vacation at the same time? As I said before, I love what I do, but there should be a way for us to look out for each other instead of scrambbling independantly as we have for so long. We are licensed, regulated by states and counties who recieve monies from us for that service but what do they provide us? I was just curious if any one else ever thought about that? Hi I am a home day care provider that has been liscensed for a little bit over a year. Can you please give me some information on how I would go about requesting a government grant. I've taken the summer off to take care of my husband recovering from back surgeory, and my ailing mother-in-law. When September 2000 starts, so does my daycare, again! I am a state licensed provider now for 2 years and have been county certified for 8. It is very rewarding work to work with children. After all you see all the "firsts" the first word, the first step. There is nothing that can replace the joy and love you have when you work with children. I wanted to say thank goodness for this website! It has helped me so much and feeling better that I can go through the process with others, not ALONE!! I have been watching children for years. I am deaf and had watched different kinds of children and children with disablites. I saw the great frasuation between parents and their sereve disabled children to face a day care that would give him/her full attention. I also saw that Maryland needs a 24 hours day care facility. Many parents and single parents work from first, second and third shifts. There is so much juggle between family, day care, babysitter, and workforce. My goal is to have a huge 24 hours day care facility for 3 months olds to 12 years olds, maybe a little older than 12 years old. I just started my enternurship workshop. I am working on my business planning for my future 24 hours day care facility. It may sounds big project,but I am going to make it to happen! :-) Also, I would like to have some advice or help from you guys who has some experience owning a day care center about writing a business plan, and where to get information about government funding, etc. This is not only my dream to come true. I am in the process of getting my state certified home day care license. I plan on taking ages: infant to 5 years. I have almost completed my requirements which includes, nfant & adult cpr & first aid, food handlers licsense and a 3 hour overview class put on by my state. My question is: do I need to be worried about liabliity insurance? And how do I get government assistance (i.e. wick). Hello, I have been a family day care provider for 15 years and over all it is great. I enjoy spending my days with a bunch of great kids. My kids make life seems so simple. This is a great site. I decided to become a day care provider because it was too expensive and there wasn't a lot of quality home day cares/facilities. It is very enjoyable and beneficial for me because I get to be at home providing quality day care for parents and also be there for my three children. My daughter that is 14 months also enjoy having other kids around who she can interact with. Some providers may feel that it is not worth the time because it can be very stressful at times. But if you have kids that arrives every morning with big smile and gives you a great big hug when they departs that's a good impression that you are doing a wonderful job. It's a great expectation!!!

Shelly Lee, Grand Rapids, M.I. When my son was a baby and we took in children, nap times were the same for everyone. I would lay them all down (on a large floor mat) and I would join them. My son would cuddle in on one side of me and I would spread my arm over the rest. That was eight years ago and they are all still pals. I watched them take their first steps, and now I'm taking the training wheels off their bikes. Enjoy.

I have an experience for Shelly of Grand Rapids. I have been in daycare for a long time and I have worked with my own children. I choose not to work in the same room as my own children but when I did work with then I made sure I included them in whatever area or activity I was working on. Then after awhile they chose to play away from me. The reason why i respond to your question is because for a least 5 years that was a big problem for me. The best advice I can give you is to tlak to your insurance dealer about insurance or if you are going through an agency of some sort with your day home then they usually have a low cost group insurance policy that you can get. Also talk to an account about where to obtain info on your taxes and get some specific questions answered.

Hi Everybody, I've been doing family childcare for 14 years and I have three children of my own.To all of you new providers, hang in there things will get better. Join your local professional organization. Find a child care provider buddy. The support helps when you are dealing with parents. As you probably figured out it's usually the parents and not the kids that will drive you crazy.If you have any energy left at all go to school, take classes the education just makes this job easier.I welcome any and all E-mail. Hi everyone. I started my dayhome in October 99. Right now I am caring for 4 boys 3 and under (counting my own). I live in Northern Canada and am looking for ways to curb cabin fever. I am so excited about finding this site. My husband and I just bought our computer Superbowl Sunday. anyway I have just been offered a job for a family friend. Wathing her new born in March. Durning a surfing spree, I came upon this sight. I am glad to see a sight where information can easley be exchanged. I have been a Family day Care Provider for the pass 10 years, a former second grade teacher. I entered this field by chance and have never regreated that choice. I have some advice for new FDCH providers: Love what you do, and do what you love. Be always mindful of the children and parents in your care. Be respectful of there ways and culture, try to have a well mixed program of cultural activities. Above all attend as many classes as you can, always keep yourself abreast of the lattest in educational materials and activities. And last but not least...remember to fill up ones self, with love, engery, and a positive attitude. Good luck in your new profession, and may you enjoy it as much as I. God bless you and your work.

I just started my 3rd year of having my own home daycare and love it...it's neat to finally find some daycare information on AOL...since Pclassic shut down...I have infants up to schoolage children...so any new activities and songs are welcomed in my curriculum...I have just started using the flannel board more with my children just before naptime and they really like seeing the songs and stories come alive for them to see...thanks for all the useful materials...SallyLee
